Joanna Newsom - “Good Intentions Paving Company”
And it’s my heart, not me
Wow, what an incredibly enveloping song. From “‘81“ I thought Newsom had abandoned her trademark vocal affectation for mainstream appeal, but here she demonstrates how deftly she can keep things mildly weird while still broadly palatable.
conversation:
‘have you seen angela’s highlights?’
‘YES! OMG! What is she, like, trying to be blonde or something?’
‘I know—she is such a brunette’
‘She is completely a brunette’
‘Did you hear about her thing with Mike?’
‘I KNOW! How totally random. He is totally into blondes, not brunettes’
‘Do you like me as a redhead?’
‘When I saw you walk through the door after you got it done I was like OMG WHO IS THAT????? Because you look SO DIFFERENT!!!!!’
‘My mom didn’t like it at first. She freaked out totally’
‘I still think you are a blonde inside, though’
—I hear this conversation at least once a day. The dye jobs being discussed occurred several months ago, but obviously the topic is still incredibly discussion-worthy.
Early Beach Boys Hit Song Topics
#5 In A Series Of Pop-Cultural ChartsJeff Rubin is a fellow College Humor writer as well as a fellow Beach Boys fan. He suggested this idea to me after seeing my other charts and discussing our favorite band. Back before “Pet Sounds”, drugs, and mental breakdowns, Brian Wilson pretty much only wrote about three things: Girl, Cars, and Surfing.
